Google's AI Overviews now cite individual reviews from a business's Google Business Profile, first documented by local search trade press in September 2025 for searches such as a doctor's name plus "reviews", and Google Maps already summarizes profile reviews with Gemini. A review that breaks Google's policy is no longer one line among fifty on a listing: it can be the line a searcher reads first. The remedy has not changed, a documented policy report, but the stakes are higher.

What changed, and when?

The first public report came from Search Engine Roundtable on September 8, 2025. A search for a doctor's name followed by "reviews" returned an AI Overview that cited reviews from the reviews section of the doctor's Business Profile. One local search consultant quoted in the report said she had "never seen them highlight individual reviews as sources." DAC Group followed on October 3, 2025, describing the reviews as incorporated "directly into the summaries".

It was not the first sign. In April 2025, Search Engine Roundtable relayed a report that Google was testing a Reviews button on the local panel that led to an AI Overview rather than the review list, although the site could not reproduce it. And since late 2024, Google Maps has offered review summaries; Google described them as reviews "summarized with Gemini", as reported on November 1, 2024.

Our own Search Console data shows the same shift from the other side. Google's generative AI features began showing our pages in early September 2026, and the page they show most is a direct question answered with platform-specific facts.

How does a review end up in an AI answer?

Through one of three surfaces, which are easy to confuse:

  • AI Overviews sit at the top of a normal Google results page. Google's documentation on AI features and your website says they "help people get to the gist of a complicated topic or question more quickly" and appear only when Google's systems judge them "additive to classic Search". They link to supporting pages, and on a review search those can be your own profile's reviews.
  • AI Mode is a separate, conversational way of searching that Google describes as "particularly helpful for queries where further exploration, reasoning, or complex comparisons are needed."
  • The review summary on your Business Profile in Maps condenses what reviewers say into a short summary.

Both AI Overviews and AI Mode may use what Google calls "query fan-out", "issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources" to build a response. That is as far as Google's documentation goes. It says "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary", and it does not say how individual reviews are chosen for citation. Anyone who claims to know the ranking factor for a cited review is guessing.

Did the rules for removing a review change?

No. The same Maps content policy decides whether a review comes down, whether or not an AI answer quotes it. Fake engagement, conflict of interest, off-topic content, harassment and the other prohibited categories are removable; an honest negative review from a real customer is not, and an AI Overview quoting it does not change that. What changed is the cost of leaving a policy-breaking review in place. Our guide to Google's review policy sets out each category and the evidence it needs.

What should you do this week?

  1. Search your business name plus "reviews", then your main service plus your city, signed out. DAC's advice is the same first step.
  2. Screenshot any AI Overview, with the date, and note which reviews it cites or paraphrases.
  3. Check each cited review against the policy categories. Expect some to be honest; those stay.
  4. Report the ones with grounds, with the evidence that proves the breach. Our guide on how to report a fake Google review and make it stick covers the account signals.
  5. Reply to the rest, briefly and specifically, following how to respond to a fake review while removal is pending.

Does removing a review change what the AI shows?

It removes the source. Once a review is gone from the Business Profile, it can no longer be cited from there or counted in the profile's summary. When an AI answer is regenerated is up to Google, and Google publishes no timeline for it, so expect a lag you cannot control. A review that someone copied onto another site can still be found there.

What about AI assistants beyond Google?

ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity assemble their answers from many of the same public sources, review text included, and they tend to name a few businesses and stop. How those assistants decide which businesses to name is a different question from what Google's AI Overviews quote, and it is covered in our post on how AI assistants choose which businesses to recommend.

Frequently asked questions

Not for your Business Profile reviews. The controls Google documents for AI features, such as nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex, apply to pages on your own website. Reviews on your profile are hosted by Google, and removal under its policy is the only way to take one out.
Google does not say. Its documentation on AI features lists no special inputs, and Google describes the Maps review summary as a summary of the reviews themselves. Write the reply for the people who read the review, not for the AI.
Not necessarily. A removed review can no longer be cited from your profile, but Google publishes no timeline for when an AI answer is regenerated, and a copy posted on another site can still surface.
They can. Google says its AI features search across subtopics and data sources and show a wide set of supporting links, and review sites are web pages like any other. What can be done about a Yelp review is different from Google, as our Yelp page explains.
