The Investigation

Individual Account Analysis
For each of the eight reviewer accounts, we documented:
- Account creation date. Six of the eight accounts were created within the same three-month window. The other two were older accounts, but their review history revealed a specific pattern (discussed below).
- Review history. Six accounts had zero other reviews on Google. They were created, used to post a single one-star review on the firm's profile, and then went dormant. This is a strong indicator of a fake account created for the sole purpose of posting a negative review.
- Profile completeness. None of the eight accounts had a profile photo. Six had generic display names (first name and last initial). Two used full names that, upon research, did not correspond to any identifiable individual in the metro area.
- The two accounts with other reviews. These two accounts were the most revealing. Both had left five-star reviews for two competing personal injury firms in the same metro area. One account had reviewed both competing firms. The other had reviewed one of the same competing firms and a marketing agency that, upon further research, was known to provide reputation management services to law firms in the area.
Pattern Analysis
When we examined the eight reviews as a group, several additional patterns emerged:
Timing clusters. The reviews were not posted randomly over the six-month period. They appeared in three distinct clusters: two reviews in the first week, then a five-week gap. Three reviews in the second cluster over a nine-day period, then a six-week gap. Three more reviews in the third cluster over a twelve-day period. This pattern is consistent with a coordinated campaign rather than organic negative reviews, which tend to appear at random intervals.
Language patterns. While the reviews covered different complaints, they shared stylistic similarities that suggested common authorship. Multiple reviews used the same unusual phrasing for common complaints. Three reviews used the phrase "zero communication" rather than the more natural "no communication" or "never communicated." Two reviews used the phrase "so-called attorneys" in a way that felt formulaic. The sentence structure across multiple reviews followed similar patterns: short accusatory sentences followed by a longer descriptive sentence.
Specificity calibration. All eight reviews were written at the same level of specificity. They were detailed enough to seem credible (mentioning case types, timelines, and communication issues) but not specific enough to be traced to an actual case. No review mentioned a specific attorney by name, a specific case outcome, a specific dollar amount, or any detail that would allow the firm to identify the reviewer as a former client. This calibration suggests that the reviewer was not writing from personal experience but rather crafting reviews designed to seem believable without being traceable.
Client database verification: The firm's case management system allowed us to search by name, date range, case type, and outcome. We ran every reviewer name through the system and confirmed zero matches. We also searched for partial name matches and phonetic variants. No reviewer could be connected to any client in the firm's 15-year history.
The Strategy
Based on our investigation, we built individual case files for each review, each documenting multiple policy violations. Violation Categories by Review
We categorized the eight reviews into three groups based on the strongest applicable policy violations:
Reviews 1 and 2: Conflict of interest (competitor-posted reviews). These were the two accounts that had also posted five-star reviews for competing firms. This is a clear conflict of interest under Google's policies. We documented the connection between these reviewer accounts and the competing firms, including screenshots of the positive reviews posted on competitor profiles and publicly available information linking the reviewer accounts to the competing firms' sphere of influence.
Reviews 3 through 6: Fake accounts (spam/fake engagement). These four reviews came from accounts with no other review history, no profile photos, recently created accounts, and display names that did not correspond to identifiable individuals. Combined with the firm's verification that no matching client existed in their database, these reviews qualified as spam under Google's policy against fake engagement. We documented the account creation patterns, the lack of review history, and the absence of any verifiable connection between the reviewer and the business.
Reviews 7 and 8: Coordinated attack pattern. While reviews 7 and 8 individually fell into the fake account category, we also used them to build the coordinated attack argument for the entire set. The timing patterns, language similarities, and account characteristics across all eight reviews demonstrated a level of coordination that, taken together, violated Google's policies against organized campaigns of fake reviews.
Case File Construction
For each review, we prepared a comprehensive case file that included:
- Full screenshots of the review with timestamps
- Screenshots of the reviewer's complete Google profile and review history
- Documentation of the specific policy violations applicable to that review
- Evidence supporting each claimed violation (competitor connections, account analysis, database verification results)
- A clear, concise summary tying the evidence to the specific Google policy being violated

Week 2: Formal Submissions
